Space elevator

Today I read an article said the space elevator is possible in the near future. Once the elevator is built, the cost of sending one kilogram into space will drop from US 20,000 to a few hundred dollars. I must say this is a crazy idea. But who knows ? The article mentioned we already have carbon nanotubes which strong enough for the cable.
